When is MPLS not really MPLS?

MPLS is the short form for MultiProtocol Labelling Service. It works by putting a label on each packet so a router can simply look at the label rather than referencing its entire routing table. MPLS gives the user slightly faster access, security, and can add other features such as QoS (Quality of Service).

mplsiconSo, when is MPLS not really MPLS? When it does not traverse the entire network using MPLS. In other words, some providers will offer a version of MPLS that is only implemented on their internal network and the customer premise equipment. They do not consider the carrier’s network as a crucial part of the equation. If MPLS is not used all the way along the path between the customer and the provider’s network the traffic will be treated the same as any other traffic on the carrier’s network and most of the advantages will be lost. The MTTR (mean time to repair) will be the same as any other standard circuit as well.

Do you need an MPLS network? In the vast majority of cases the answer is no. The benefits of an MPLS network can largely be achieved using a provider supplied Private Network or Managed VPN, both of which are available at a fraction of the cost of an MPLS network.
